The editor of this section is MARION JANET (THONVOLD) RIME, a granddaughter of Johannes. Marion has been working faithfully on this history for over two years, gathering data, pictures, and writing.

With the resources she has been able to use, she has tried to make this history as accurate and complete as possible.

Now a little about Marion. She was born on a farm near Pennock, MN. At the age of seven the family moved to Willmar, MN where she attended Lafayette School and graduated from Willmar High School. She was a member of Vinji Lutheran Church and was confirmed and married there.

In 1946 she was united in marriage to Lester (Swen) Rime. They have lived in Spicer, MN ever since their marriage. That is where they raised their five children. They are members of Faith Lutheran Church and are active in church and community.

At the present time Marion is employed in the deli and catering business in the Green Lake Mall. Swen is mayor of Spicer. You will read more about their family in this section of the history.

JOHANNES KALLEVIG

JOHANNES KALLEVIG, the oldest of the three brothers, was born in Moster Haven, Norway, on 16 January 1849. His wife, Kari, was born in Bergen, Norway, 25 March 1859. They were married in 1881. They came to America in 1886 and located on a farm near Eagle Lake. They later purchased a farm in Arctander Township, now owned by Glen Lindquist. From there they moved to Willmar. Johannes died in November of 1931, and Kari died in December of 1935. They were blessed with eleven children.

BERTHA JOHANNA (KALLEVIG) NELSON was the first child born to Johannes and Kari in 1882. She married John B. Nelson, who was born in 1869. They farmed by Sunburg, MN. John died in 1945 and Bertha died in Minneapolis in 1963. They had 6 children born to them which included a set of twin girls, Bernice and Alice.

NOEL JOHN NELSON

NOEL JOHN NELSON was the first child born to Bertha and John in 1904. He worked on the Railway Express. Noel married Marie Breska from Willow River, MN in 1936. Marie is the daughter of Frank and Mary Breska. They had 2 children: Shirley, born in 1937, attended the U of M in Education and is a Dr.; and Leon, who also went to the U of M and works at Control Data. Leon is married to Janet Strom.

BERNICE CORNELIA (NELSON) JOSEPH

BERNICE CORNELIA (NELSON) JOSEPH was born in 1906 and attended Moorhead State Teachers College and was a teacher for awhile. In 1927 she married Ross Ogelvie Joseph whose parents were John and Josephine Joseph. Ross was a Buick salesman in Hayward, WI. He died in 1976. They had one child, RICHARD JOHN JOSEPH, born in 1940. Rick went to Gustavus College and is now a counselor in Realties. Rick is married to Jeanne Hein, who was born in 1941. She attended Wayne College in Nebraska and became a teacher.

ALICE MIRANDA (NELSON) HASKEL was born to Bertha and John April 27, 1906 and attended Moorhead State Teachers College with Bernice. She went to work at Strutwear Co. Alice married Charles Haskell from Michigan. Charles worked at Northern Pump in Minneapolis.

HATTIE MARIAN (NELSON) LOWE was born to Bertha and John October 12, 1910 in Kerkhoven, MN. She went to Vocational School and became a cosmetologist. Hattie married Donald James Lowe January 13, 1945. Don was born in 1897 in Herman, NE to James Donald and Emma Lowe. He went to Wayne College in Nebraska and worked as a Personnel Manager for Control Corp. Don died in October 1981. They had one child, JOAN MARIAN, born November 15, 1945 in Minneapolis.

JOHN J. KALLEVIG

JOHN J. KALLEVIG was born to Johannes and Kari January 16, 1885 in Bergen, Norway. He came to America with his parents when he was about 1 year old, in 1886.

On March 10, 1910 he was united in marriage to Julia Leah Curtiss, who was born in New Rockford, ND, August 25, 1892. John farmed all his life and in 1919 he moved to a farm in the Yellowstone Valley where he could get irrigation. From there they moved to Sidney, MT where he did odd jobs, which were hard to find during the depression.

John died in Sidney September 1, 1961 and Julia died in Williston, ND July 7, 1945. They had 13 children.

PEARL AGNES (KALLEVIG) BOLAND was the first child born to John and Julia on May 24, 1911 in McHenry, ND.

She worked as a salesperson in a department store for 7 years, then did what she had always wanted to do, took a year of nurses training and became an LPN, which she worked at for about 12 years. She is now retired but can’t stand to sit around and do nothing, so gets up every morning at 4:30 and delivers 50 papers for the Tacoma News Tribune. Bill worked as a truck driver and worked on various construction jobs. They were divorced in October of 1935. On November 4, 1940 she married Joseph Alphonsis Boland from Cascade, IA. Joseph was born January 21, 1905 in Cascade to Joseph Edward and Gertrude (Drew) Boland. He worked in the sugar factory in Sidney and also in Billings, MT. He also worked at other construction jobs. Joseph died January 4, 1968 in Anoconda, MT and is buried in Sidney. They had 3 children of their own and Joseph adopted Floyd and Russel Collins on August 21, 1952. Pearl now lives in Tacoma, WA.

ANDREW JOHN KALLEVIG

ANDREW JOHN KALLEVIG was born to Johannes and Kari December 28, 1887 at Norway Lake, MN. He had a limited education in this area but after growing up took a course at Camrose Lutheran College in Canada for a winter term. Probably an English course. In 1909 he decided to try homesteading at Blooming Prairie, AB, Canada (later the name was changed to Morrin, AB) and received his citizenship papers June 10, 1912, with his homestead application being approved June 12, 1913. His closest neighbors were Peder and Theodore Notland and his first house was later turned into the farm “chicken coop”. Andrew told about the time he went to the town of Stettler for supplies and when they returned there were Indians camped on their place for the night. They meant no harm but it was pretty hard to sleep that night. On November 15, 1919 he was united in marriage to Ruth Tveter from Tawatinaw, AB. Ruth was born February 7, 1899 in Oslo, Norway. There were 3 children born to them, and 1 adopted. Andrew farmed in Morrin and helped to build a new church in the 30’s, which is still being used. His church was very important to him and to Ruth as well. She was Superintendent of Sunday School for some years and very active in Ladies Aid and Church. In 1944 the family moved to Vancouver, BC, Canada where he worked in the shipyards, did carpentry work, and later went into construction work for his son-in-law until he retired. Andrew died on November 17, 1962 in Vancouver, BC and Ruth died April 14, 1975 in Camrose, AB.

VIOLET LILLY (KALLEVIG) HOFFMAN was born to Andrew and Ruth December 7, 1920 in Drumheller, AB, Canada. She grew up on the farm home at Morrin, AB, went to a country school near there and attended high school in Morrin, then entered the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute at Camrose, AB, graduating after a 3 year course. On July 25, 1941 she married Edward Paul Hoffman at the Morrin Lutheran Church her father helped build. Ed was born September 16, 1908 in Rosenort, MB, Canada. During WWII he worked at ship building, then did house building in Vancouver, BC until the Lutheran Church asked him to do their building. He then went into church designing, building, and supervising for over 20 years, under Canadian Home Missions. He also built for other denominations. In 1964 they moved to Camrose, AB where he built the Bethany Lutheran Nursing Home. Ed has worked with Boy Scouts and is now on the Village Council in Bawlf, where they live. He also serves as Deputy Mayor and sits on the Bottle River Planning Commission for the central area of Alberta. Violet is active in church work. They have built a new store for their business, Ed Hoffman Ltd., which sells building materials. They have 6 children, all born in Vancouver, except Lyle who was born in New Westminster, BC, Canada.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE NAME. KALEVIK was the original spelling in the early days, as you can see on the Small Pox Vaccination Certificate for Mathias, the oldest son of Elias Kallevig. At that time they used the name Mattiasen, meaning “son of Mathias”.

This certificate, dated October 3, 1887, translated says: Mathias, born at KALEVIK of parents Elias and Gunvor. They must have changed their spelling later because they now use the spelling KALLEVIK both on their name and place.

They farmed for awhile in the Pennock area, then moved to Baudette, MN where he farmed and worked in a saw mill. In 1923 they lost everything they owned, when their home burned down. They gave the land they owned to their church for a Bible Camp, which it still is to this day, and moved to Willmar, MN. There Edward worked on the railroad for awhile but went back to farming. They farmed in Pennock and Arctander Township. In the early 30’s they moved back to Willmar, where he died on September 26, 1933. Lena continued to live in Willmar until her death May 16, 1979 at the age of 90. Edward and Lena had 12 children.

GERHARDT BENJAMIN THONVOLD, the 7^th child of Lena and Edward, was born December 20, 1915 in Beaudette, MN and attended school in Beaudette and Willmar, MN. He was confirmed at West Lake Lutheran Church north of Pennock. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. After returning, he worked as parts man in the Ford garage in Willmar for a number of years, then he worked for Central Dairy until he retired. For a few years after retirement he worked part time for Willmar Poultry. He is now fully retired and lives in Willmar. Gay married Cleo Catherine Fritz, born November 29, 1920, daughter of Jack and Ella Fritz of South Dakota. She works for Molenaar Plastics in Willmar. Gay and Cleo have 3 children. Terry married Julie Anderson on May 25,1979. Julie was born November 29, 1954 to Russell and Wilda Anderson of Elgin, NE. They moved to Council Bluffs, IA, where Terry worked for Lay Potato Chips Co., and they both were foster parents to several children. In 1986 they moved to Rapid City, SD, where they live now. ROXANNE JEANETTE (THONVOLD) KJELLSEN was born April 8, 1955 to Rudy and Nicky in Erwin, SD, where she also attended school and church. She married Gary Kjellsen, son of Mayo and Joyce Kjellsen from Erwin, SD. In October of 1981 they were both killed in an automobile accident, leaving 2 children: Gary Jr., born June 7, 1974; and Allesha, born November 13, 1977. The children are being raised by Gary’s parents in South Dakota.

LAWRENCE “LARRY” LUVERN THONVOLD was the 9^th child of Edward and Lena, born September 11, 1921 in Baudette, MN. He attended grade school and graduated from Willmar, MN and was confirmed at the Vinji Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was in the first group that was drafted in WWII from Willmar and served in Africa, Italy and Sicily. When he returned he was a car salesman for many years, then started driving a semi truck out of Minneapolis. On July 7, 1954 he was electrocuted when his truck got hung up under a live wire which was accidentally grounded by a co-worker.

NINA ETHEL (THONVOLD) NELSON, 10^th child of Lena and Edward, was born December 25, 1922 in Beaudette, MN.She attended school and graduated from Willmar, MN. She married George H. Nelson of Willmar on October 18, 1942. George was born October 24, 1919 to August and Agnes Nelson of Willmar. They lived in Willmar for several years, where all six of their children were born. All the children were baptized at Vinji Lutheran Church in Willmar. They moved to Minneapolis in 1954, where George continued his employment as an interior decorator and Nina began working at Munsingware. They both have retired from their jobs and still live in Minneapolis. Their children all graduated from high school in Minneapolis and were confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church.

They had no children. He is now married to Nancy Kay Peterson (Hansen), born December 31, 1951 to Walter Vernon and Erma Jane Peterson. Nancy was a widow with 2 boys: Tim, born October 3, 1970 and Jeffrey, born August 23, 1972. Nancy is also a nurse and they live in Minneapolis.

MARION JANET (THONVOLD) RIME, Lena and Edward’s 11^th child, was born March 30, 1925 on a farm by Pennock, MN and moved to Willmar when she was 7 years old. She attended grade school and graduated from Willmar High School. She was confirmed and was a member of Vinji Lutheran Church in Willmar until her marriage to Lester “Swen” Eugene Rime, son of Gilbert and Marit Rime, in 1946. They made their home in Spicer, MN, where they still live. Five children were born to them with all of them being baptized, confirmed and married in Faith Lutheran Church (at one time our church was Zion Lutheran until we merged with Sharon Lutheran and became Faith). They also all attended grade school and graduated from Spicer-New London Schools. Lester was born November 22, 1925 in Sunburg, MN and moved to Spicer at 7 years old. He attended grade school in Spicer and graduated from Willmar High School, after which he enlisted in the Army in World War II. After he returned to Spicer he worked with his dad in the carpenter business until he became a rural letter carrier. He also was elected Mayor of Spicer in 1987. Marion works with a delicatessen and catering business in Spicer. Swen carried mail for 30 years, then retired and went into the real estate business.

She worked there until her marriage to Sammy Smith, of Georgia. They were divorced in 1981 and Nancy now lives in Spicer with her 2 children and is the bookkeeper for Vegdahls Hardware Store. After graduation from high school he attended Jr. College in Willmar until he started x-ray training at the Rice Memorial Hospital, where he is now Director of Radiology. He married Susan Brecke, daughter of Edward and Irene Brecke of Spicer. Sue was born January 21, 1949 and attended Spicer-New London schools and Faith Lutheran Church, where she was President of the Church. She also is the organist and teaches Bible classes and also teaches piano lessons. KAREN DONNA (RIME) KOSSE, Marion and Lester’s 3^rd child, was born August 9, 1949. After graduation she worked in a bank in Minneapolis and Willmar until her marriage to David Kosse, son of Charles and Lorraine Kosse of Norway Lake. They lived in the Norway Lake area and attended the East Norway Lake Church, where they were both active. David works for Duininck-Gilcrest Construction Co. and is now Superintendent of Highway Construction in TX. The family moved to Fort Worth, TX in 1985, where Karen started working in a branch bank of Sunbelt Savings. She now is Assistant Manager. GEORGE LUVERN THONVOLD, 12^th child of Lena and Edward, was born September 29, 1927 in Pennock, MN. He attended school in Willmar, MN and was confirmed at Vinji Lutheran Church. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. After the war he worked for the railroad until after 25 years he was forced to an early retirement (in 1975), because of a severe heart attack. He married Geraldine Merilda Hougen, daughter of Barney and Stella Hougan of Willmar, on February 26, 1949. Gerry was born February 19, 1930 and has worked at Cashwise Grocery Store for over 20 years. Luvern and Gerry have always made their home in Willmar, where their 3 children were born and went to school. All three were baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar.

PETER KALLEVIG was born December 21, 1890 to Johannes and Kari and died on February 25, 1969. Pete married Jessie Dorothy Lewis on February 20, 1912 at New Rockford, ND. Jessie was born August 4, 1895 and died May 27, 1972. They lived in the Willmar area until about 1925, then moved to Minneapolis. In 1927 the family moved to Canada and farmed at Morrin, AB until 1936. They then moved back to Minneapolis, where Pete worked at the Minneapolis Gas Co. until he retired. MATHIAS KALLEVIG was born to Johannes and Kari near Norway Lake, MN. on March 16, 1894. He did farm work around the Willmar area and served a short time in WWI. After that he was a car salesman in Willmar as well as a farm hand. Matt died April 19, 1964. He never married.

OLE KALLEVIG

OLE KALLEVIG was born to Johannes and Kari January 10, 1896 in Willmar, MN. He sold sewing machines in Willmar for a while and worked for the city of Minneapolis. He was in the Army in WWI and later he and brother John had a little café called the “Coffee Stua” on Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis for several years. Bean Soup was their specialty. Ole never married and he died in the Willows Nursing Home in Minneapolis September 1, 1987.

OLIVIA AGATHA (KALLEVIG) REIERSON was born to Johannes and Kari in 1897 at Norway Lake, MN. She married Gustave Jenius Reierson and lived in Willmar for a time, then moved to Minneapolis, where Gust was in interior decorator. Gust was born in 1891 at Hougesund, Norway. He served in the Navy in WWI. They made 2 trips to Norway to visit relatives and friends, in 1966 and 1970. Gust died in October of 1975 and Olive still lives in Minneapolis. They had 2 sons: Gordon and Robert.

LAWRENCE BERNARD KALLEVIG was born to Johannes and Kari June 12, 1899. He worked as a garage salesman, Watkins Dealer, and on a dairy farm in Willmar, MN. During WWII he served in the Navy until he was medically discharged. He married Olive Evangeline England, daughter of John and Anna England of Willmar. Olive worked for the telephone company and retired in 1971 after 44 years. She lives in Willmar. Lawrence died in February of 1954. They had 1 daughter, Mary Ann.

MARY ANN (KALLEVIG) STRAHLKE was born December 16, 1937 in Willmar, MN. She attended school in Willmar and after graduation worked for the telephone company in Minneapolis for 6 years. She now works for Bachman’s Florist. In 1960 she was united in marriage to Albert Alan Strahlke, son of Elmer and Loretta Strahlke. Al was born January 29, 1932 and is Vice President of the Prior Lake State Bank where they live. They have 3 children: JEFFREY ALAN, born January 15, 1962; and twins LISA ANN and LINDA LEE, born March 24, 1964. Lisa is attending Cosmetology School in Burnsville, MN and Linda works for Prudential Mortgage. Linda is married to Mark Parady, who is manager of a pizza parlor in Minnetonka, MN and they live in Bloomington, MN.

HELMER ROY KALLEVIG

HELMER ROY KALLEVIG was the last child born to Johannes and Kari on May 16, 1902 in Arctander Township in Minnesota. He sold sewing machines for a while and then went to work at the Cliff Mines in Northern Minnesota as a crane operator. He married Elnora Marie Kanges in July of 1933. They lived in Duluth for some time, and then moved to Pengilly, MN, where they lived until his death in November 1973. They also had a cottage on Lake 30 near Pengilly, where they spent their summers. Elnora (Nora) was born April 8, 1896 and now lives in a nursing home in Northome, MN.
